Testosterone and Women’s Health: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Published July 9, 2026

When people think about female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone usually come to mind first. But testosterone plays a significant role in women’s health too, and its decline during perimenopause and menopause is often overlooked.

Testosterone contributes to energy levels, muscle strength, cognitive clarity, and libido. As levels drop, women may notice persistent fatigue, low mood, reduced sex drive, or a general sense of not feeling like themselves. These symptoms are sometimes dismissed or attributed to other causes, which can delay proper support.

Testosterone therapy for women is not as widely discussed as oestrogen-based HRT, but for some women it can be an important part of a complete treatment plan, particularly when standard HRT hasn’t fully resolved certain symptoms. Blood tests can help determine whether testosterone levels are contributing to how you’re feeling.

If you’ve been treated for menopause symptoms but still don’t feel like yourself, it may be worth raising testosterone as part of the conversation with your clinician.
